goal #1

One of my goals is to discover, understand and live by my core values.  I have a work sheet that lists about 100 core values.  I circled the ones that I thought reflected my values and what I hold true, group values with similar meanings together into five groups and label each group with a value that encompasses the group.  This was really eye-opening!  Most of what I value has to do with meaningful work - maybe that's why I quit working at Boeing (making silly airplanes!) and went into nursing.  My next heavily represented category encompassed the values of loyalty, open and honesty, truth.  Pretty good - yes?  The remaining three categories are equally filled with relationship, creativity/fun and personal development - my other goals for this quarter.  I can now say I have my core values - and it's not that I didn't have them before, I just didn't have them in a structured way that I can define my actions by.  It's like having many pairs of black shoes in a big box and feeling disorganized and lost when you try to find a pair.  You know you have them but it's difficult to grab without sorting through the others.  Now I will tell you what my core values are....:) not in any particular order.....

Respect - for others, for myself, demand respect from others for myself, boundaries

Meaningful work - putting my heart and soul into my profession

Relationships - family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances

Fun - creativity, humor, child-like

Growth - physically and personally including education, spiritual and reflective

OK - a bit of honesty here....I am starting to cry just looking at this list.  I feel like a huge weight has just been lifted off of me.  I have felt so much like a whirlwind in my mind, heart and life and I finally feel like I am finding my core and truth.

I think I'll go meditate for awhile!

I love reading what you write. Your goals and core values are beautiful. It sounds like you truly are working on YOU and being so honest with your emotions. You have so much to offer those in your circle, whether they be at home, work or school. I first saw how tender hearted you are one day in class last quarter and remember thinking how strong and brave you were to show your emotions in class.
Reading your words makes me realize how completely disorganized my thoughts and feelings are right now. Having said that, I can definitely relate to your black shoe analogy! LOL! Truly! I have actually been working really hard on organization of my home which has been my sanctuary...I love my home, but it has been very neglected since beginning this educational journey. Thank you for helping me see through the muck!
    Keep it up sista!

  2. Maybe you could share the list of core values with us. I am curious about it now. :D
I like adults like you who still "trying for new and changes in your life." Not to complain, but there are few adults out there who stay still, don't want to change anymore. I think that's why I said you're cool mother because you are open and honest. I also want to be an adult who care for core values, more education/ knowledge, finding meanings in life... Still a long way to get there, but glad I have a mentor/mother like you! :)
